Oman International Bank Timeline

1984
In the second half of 1984, H.E. Dr. Omar Bin Abdul Muniem Al Zawawi, with the approval of Central Bank of Oman negotiated an agreement with the British Bank of the Middle East to aquire 14 of their branches effective from 13th of December, 1984. In addition, OIB opened a branch at Musana'a. The bank's network expanded to 20 branches, which placed it in a position to service the banking and financial needs of the Omani community over a Computerised Branchmuch wider area than before.

1985
OIB extended its network outside the Sultanate of Oman by opening an overseas branch in Mumbai, India; thus, creating a positive impact both locally and internationally, as well as fulfilling the bank's objectives in terms of growth. This branch was opened with a fully computerized on-line ICIM 101 (ICL 25) Computer and Bank Master banking system.

Later in the year, the bank expanded its network further by opening branches in Buraimi, Ibra and Sinaw bringing the total number to 23. Oman International Bank was chosen for the second time to lead and manage a USD 20 million syndicated loan for the Oman Refinery Company.

1986
Furthermore, the bank opened branches at Jibroo, Khasab, and Wudam. The training center at Al Khuwair became fully operational with the appointment of Training Manager and the commencement of in-house training of staff and management. The Training Department started to cope with the demand for thoroughly trained Omani personnel and kept abreast with cutting-edge technologies.

1987
Oman International Bank played an important role in the development of companies and providing financial assistance to manufacturing sector. The bank acted as a lead manager in the syndicated loan for Oman Textile Mills.

To serve Armed Forces and complement our existing banking, branches were formed at Muaskar Al Murtafaa and Thumrait as well as our range of mobile services in a number of interior locations were introduced. OIB also opened branch at Maseirah to serve the Air Force.

OIB's branch network grew to 30 with establishment of the units at Mahdah, Yanqul and Maseirah. Computerization of the branch network was completed. With highly automated network, the bank gained considerably in terms of internal efficiency, productivity and marketing.

OIB - Credit CardsThe Auto Bank Card Service commenced with the installation of the first ABC machine at the Main Office Ruwi in May. This was followed by three installations in the Muscat area.

Later that year, OIB launched the Visa card. It was the first Credit Card issued by an Omani Bank and the first to be denominated in Rial Omani.

1988
Oman International Bank completed five years of operations. The bank expanded its network further this year with the addition of a branch in an important fishing port of Al Ashkarah and the commencement of Mobile Banking Services in the very remote fishing areas in the Shuwaimiya. Further units were established at Wadi Tayeen, Bilad Bani Bu Ali, Manah, Al Kahel and Seeb. The branch network grew to 36.

OIB played a key role in the industrial sector by providing financial assistance and supporting the raising of capital for new projects, including the Oman Water Pumps Manufacturing Company and the Oman Fisheries Company.

The Electronic Banking service was expanded with the introduction of the ABC automatic teller machines at Nizwa, Salalah, Sohar, Seeb and Buraimi.

OIB launched "Masroor", a savings account aimed at school children in Oman, to inculcate the important saving habit. OIBChilren Enjoying a Masroor Party was the first bank in the Gulf to introduce a Mobile Banking service. It also introduced the unique Phone Bank service, which offers the customers the facility of banking with OIB anywhere and anytime by phone.

The Dealing Room contributed significantly to the growth of the Bank. The introduction of Margin Trading, trading in securities and physical gold in the Omani banking market paid off generously.

1989
OIB's branch network grew during the year to 39 branches with the opening of Al Aiga, Rustaq and Al Hijj branches. The ABC ATM network grew to 17 locations all over the country. New products launched during the year included the Personal Loan Scheme and Night Safe Service.

Computer capacity was once again enhanced by more than three times by installing IBM AS/400 B60, a top of range computer system.

OIB has taken great pride in achieving a high level of Omanisation at all levels in the bank. Two of the senior Omani managers were appointed as Assistant General Managers forming 50% of the bank's Executive Management Team. The Omanisation level has gone up to 73.17%.

The bank set up an Investment Management Department (IMD) to provide financial services to the corporate clients and individuals. IMD's range of financial services includes management of public / rights issues of securities, fund management services and financial advisory services.

1990
The bank was the proud recipient of His Majesty's 20th Anniversary Award to Industries for excellence in the banking sector. It was a reflection of the banks commitment to the progress of the Sultanate and its people.

His Majesty's Award for Excellence in BankingDuring the year, total number of branches increased to 46 with the opening of new branches at Al Khabourah, Al Khoudh, Barka, Dhalkut, Dhank and Sadah. OIB launched the High Yield Foreign Currency Account where the customers are given the opportunity to save major currencies at very competitive interest rates.

As part of the continued progress on  computerization, the bank was the first to implement PROFITS software Philips. This project marked a major development in the bank's computerisation process.

The bank's staff grew to 494 with almost 77% of the personnel being Omanis.

1991
The bank opened its 50th branch at Al Aqr. With this achievement, the cherished goal of becoming the largest Bank with the largest branch network in the Sultanate was sustained. The width of the bank's operations were further increased with the opening of branches at Thumrait City, Adam, Sleef and Madinat Al Nahdha.

The bank further reinforced its commitment to promoting Omani manufactured products by co-operating with the Rusayl Industrial Estate Authority. As part of the project, OIB's extensive branch network were used to present professional display set ups in the lobbies of selected OIB branches. The bank is hopeful that this effort will provide a wide exposure to Omani manufactured products and encourage the customers to buy Omani goods.

A Staff Training Facility was established at Sohar to supplement the one already in place at Salalah. With this additional facility, the bank was able to conduct courses for 487 staff members in-house during the year. In addition, 48 staff members particippated in courses overseas, mainly in the Middle East region. The encouraging level of Omanisation continued the upward trend during the year to increase the ratio to 78.52% of the total staff at the end of 1991.

The tremendously popular ABC centers increased to 29 during the year, with 4 locations boasting dual installations. In addition, one of the ABC installations at the Main Office in Ruwi dispenses OMR and USD, while the installation at Buraimi offers customers the facility to withdraw OMR and UAE Dirhams.

With the immense success of the first phase of Transarabia Expedition's search for the lost city of Ubar last year, the bank was the main sponsor of Phase 2 of this project. The archaeological team in-charge of project expected to complete the detailed survey of the most promising sites by April '92.

A 5 km mini run was organized by the 'Race Aid Committee for the Disabled' under the bank's active sponsorship. The proceeds from this and other such mini runs assisted in procuring wheel chairs and artificial limbs for the country's disabled.

1992
The national launch of the Savings Prize Draw with the sum of R.O.135,000/-, the largest amount of prize money given away to the customers through 'Mandoos' (Treasure Chest), saw at the same time, an increase of around R.O.8 million in the branch Savings Deposits for the last quarter of 1992.

The opening of the branch at Seib Qatanah in Jebel Akhdar was an exciting pioneering effort. It was inaugurated in May by the late Qais bin Abdul Muniem Al Zawawi, the former Deputy Prime Minster for Finance and Economy. An additional branch was opened at Suwaiq in the Batinah region augmenting the strong network in that region.

In Haima, the Wusta region, a new branch was inaugurated linking among the fisheries and oil fields of the South, South West and the urban centers of the North.

The new branch at Firq incorporated the District Manager's office for the interior region and a training facility for the area.

1993
Oman International Bank achieved yet another first, this time in senior management. Yahya Bin Said Bin Abdulla Al Jabry was appointed the first Omani General Manager of any commercial bank in Oman.

Four new members were elected to the Board of Directors in 1993 - H.E. Khamis Bin Mubarak Al Kiyumi, Mr. Saad bin Suhail Bahwan, H.E. Abdulla Bin Abbas Bin Ahmed and H.E. Salim Bin Ali Bin Nasser Assiyabi.

During the year, continuing emphasis was placed on Quality Service (QS) training programs, following an initiative begun in 1992, with the objective of making OIB a more customer driven organization and to improve service to our 221,000 customers (an increase from 204,000).

OIB's network of branches grew to 60, including two in India (Mumbai and Cochi), with the addition of 2 new local branches at Izki and Sumail.

The network of EFTPOS and ATM terminals continued to expand. ATM services were available to 44% of the customers nation-wide, the largest network in the Sultanate.

1994
In order to keep pace with the enormous growth of the bank over the last ten years and to maintain the edge as the leading bank in Oman, OIB put more emphasis on the Quality Service program. The QS-2000 project was initiated in June 1994 with its main objective being to upgrade branches and improve customer service.

The impressive new head office building at Al Khuwair was opened and served both as a distinctive city landmark and a guiding light for the citizens of Oman. The Head Office is the center of bank's major administrative functions, including the Treasury, Dealing Room and the offices of Board of Directors.

A new branch was opened at Mabela, in the Capital Area. During the year, a new generation of ATMs were introduced. Furthermore, 11 ATMs were added. OIB installed 225 EFTPOS terminals in the leading hotels and retail outlets to create the largest terminal network in the country.

The bank signed a contract with Unisys World Trade to introduce state of the art branch and office automation technology in all branches.

In line with the Government policy, the bank achieved more than 85% Omanisation by the end of December 1994.

1995
The Quality Service 2000 project was successfully implemented in all 70 OIB branches in Oman. In parallel with QS - 2000 and in partnership with Unisys, the bank began developing Finesse 2000, a new branch automation delivery system.

During early 1995, OIB became one of the first banks to be linked to the prestigious Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT), which improved communications with financial institutions worldwide.

In 1995, the internal audit was re-organized and its 12 strong team added considerably to control and supervision of OIB's increasingly complex operations.

In line with the commitments to make banking convenient to all OIB opened ten more branches during 1995 - Khadra'a Al Saad, Nakhal, Mudhaibi, Bani Bu Hassan, Aseelah, Wadi Bani Khalid, Sinainah, Diba, Al Hamra and Azaiba.

1995 saw the launch of the MasterCard, as an adjunct to the VISA cards.

To celebrate 25 years of progress in the Sultanate, the Mandoos Silver Jubilee Savings Scheme with its prize draw proved a most successful promotion in the country.

OIB strengthened its share capital to meet projected growth. The public issue was very well received, with strong over subscription. The bank increased its capital to R.O.24,300 million, giving OIB the largest capital for a commercial bank in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Omanisation plan reached 87%. Staff intake increasingly focused on graduates of the Sultan Qaboos University and the Oman Institute of Bankers.

1996
H.E. Dr. Omar bin Abdul Muniem Al Zawawi, founder and Chairman of the Board relinquished his appointment on 25th November. The Board elected H.E. Noor bin Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman to take over the role of Chairman.

1996 saw the launch of OIB's ABC Plus Card, an enhanced ATM Card and on-line Debit Card, available free to 260,000 customers of the bank. The ABC Plus is accepted at hundreds of outlets throughout Oman.

OIB became the first bank in Oman to implement 'START', a new card management system to enable VISA and MasterCard to change over from debit to credit cards.

The 'Mandoos 96' savings promotion helped to inculcate saving habits in the customers and earned the bank the largest share of the market in savings deposits.

During the year, the bank played an important role in the promotion of worthy causes and local spectacles. OIB was the main sponsor for the 'Festival for Orphans', organized by the Muscat Securities Market in 1996. The bank widened its range of investment services to include: Issue Management, Merchant Banking, Underwriting, Advisory Services, Portfolio Services and Research. The bank entered into strategic alliance with Oman Securities Portfolio Company, a leading brokerage company, to enable customers to enter into security transactions on the Muscat Securities Market through its branch network.

Branch expansion program saw the opening of seven new branches - Sara's Al Jadeeda, Al Kamel Al Wafi, Bisya, Sohar Al Hambar, Majees, Wadi Hibi and Al Wadi Al Kabir. The first branch in Pakistan opened in Karachi in April 1996 and attracted first class corporate clientele. The bank network grew to a total of 80 branches, including 3 overseas.

The Omanisation ratio reached an impressive 87.68% in 1996.

1997
1997 was another excellent year with a net profit of OMR 16.7 million, an 84% improvement over 1996. The branch expansion programme continued and 4 new branches were opened at Ghala, Al Hail, Al Bidaya and Tiwi taking the total branch network in Oman to 81. The Unisys Finesse 2000 branch automation project was rolled out to 8 branches thus improving the quality of customer service. Efforts to train and develop Omani nationals in middle and senior management continued taking the Omanisation level to 88.2%. The OIB public issue was oversubscribed 7.3 times showing investor confidence in the Bank.

1998
The Bank made remarkable strides in expanding its service capabilities and in introducing new products with particular emphasis on electronic Banking via ATMs and POS terminals at prime locations to handle the ever increasing demand for card related services. 14 ATMs were opened at Afi, Barka, Bidiya, Ghala, Ghubrah, Ibra, Ibri, Maseerah, Rusayl, Salalah, Samad A'Shan, Shinas, Sohar and Thumrait taking the strength of OIB ATM Network to 78.

August saw the formal opening of OIB's new branch at Lahore in Pakistan, taking the total branch network to 85. The Unisys Finesse 2000 branch automation system project continued throughout 1998 with a total of 56 branches becoming on-line. The Omanisation ratio continued to grow and was 88.85% by the end of 1998. The Board of Directors appointed McKinsey & Company to provide assistance in developing the future strategy and organisation of the Bank. New products like Al Morunah and Al Mostaneer were introduced.

1999
January 1, 1999 marked the 15th anniversary of the formation of OIB and the dramatic launch and response to the 'Mandoos '99' savings scheme. 'Mandoos '99' offered 99 Mercedes Cars and 99 cash prizes to its customers. The rollout installation of the Unisys Finesse 2000 was completed in Oman. Substantial effort and time were dedicated to ensure that all systems and equipment were Y2K compliant. The Bank engaged the services Safetynet Consultants in the development of a Business Contingency and Continuity Planning (BCCP) related to all areas of banking operations. The year also saw 24 hour ATM services being introduced in the Kochi Branch of OIB and overall the number of ATMs grew to 95. The Omanisation ratio reached 89.46%.

This was a landmark year in terms of the overall look of the Bank. Tin terms of changing the signboards at all its branches. The new red and green boards are in keeping with the OIB Corporate colours and the colours of the nation. 1999 also saw the launch of 2 new products - ABC Plus VISA Electron Card and VISA Platinum Card. The ABC Plus VISA Electron Card enables customers to access their cash and the facility to shop at millions of outlets around the world. OIB became the first Bank in Oman to launch the prestigious VISA Platinum Card which provides members the luxury of almost unlimited credit. On November 16, OIB added one more branch to its network at Mazyounah in the Governerate of Dhofar, taking the total Branch Network to 86.
